After the initial reforming of Team Starfox, everything seemed to be going well between the team members. Fox and Falco renewed their competitive rivalry; Slippy developed some new enhancements for the Arwings; Peppy was called on to advise several military actions in other sectors from the Great Fox, and Krystal spent many hours, first in simulation then in actual flight, honing her skills as a pilot. As time passed, this became a problem for Falco.
As she became more and more skilled as a wingman, Fox began to choose her for missions that he would usually use Falco for. Also, aboard the ship and during downtime, Fox and Krystal were virtually inseparable; everyone could see that they were developing feeling for each other. But to Falco, it seemed as if he was being passed over, left out, and abandoned for the newer team member. He also felt that her being a young vixen definitely didn't hurt her chances for promotion, either. At this rate, she would be second in command, and Falco would be dropped to a lower position, despite his long years on the team. How dare Fox take him so lightly, he thought, when he was already a better pilot than both of them, and for such a pointless reason! Her being Fox's love interest wouldn't help him if she messed up during a mission... He decided to challenge Fox over it, in the best way he knew how...
Some time later, Fox and the others had started off to the common room to relax a bit, and to talk about their next move, including a mission to the Ganaris system to deal with some space pirates; Fox was already talking with Krystal about how well she would work as his wingman for the job. Falco followed behind, watching carefully. As they were nearing the room, Fox suddenly decided that he needed to change his clothes and maybe take a quick sonic-shower before they sat down together; he had basically been wearing the same clothes since the end of the last mission. He headed off to his room, asking the others to go on without him. Falco made a point to loiter in the hall, fiddling with a console in the wall down the hall, until, several minutes after Fox had left, Krystal returned to the hallway and passed by him. He bowed his head and shook it he had had a feeling something like that would happen eventually. Quietly, so as not to alert the vixen to his tracking her, he followed her at a careful distance down the hall.
*****************************
After entering his room, Fox let out a relieved sigh as he started to undress. He carefully kicked his boots off into the corner and then pulled off his flight jacket and hung it on a hook on the wall. He looked for a short bit at the sturdy thing; despite being a bit ratty and having been torn many times before, he had definitely been glad to have it more than once out there. He went into the bathroom and turned on the shower, and was about to pull his shirt off when he heard a knock on the door. He let his shirt tails drop on the outside of his pants, then went to the door, figuring it was Falco with some ribbing on his performance in their latest mission.
It wasnt. Krystal stood there, looking at him with a nervous, excited aura about her. As soon as she saw him with his shirt out and eyes on hers, the bridge of her muzzle blushed slightly, but still asked, "Can I come in for a moment?"
Fox blinked, then backed up, saying quickly, "Uh sure" He watched her walk into his room and turn to face him, then shut the door. "How can I help you?"
Krystal stood with her hands clasped in front of her, oddly nervous despite her time spent with Fox elsewhere on the Great Fox, and then stepped up closer, smiling. "I just wanted to say thanks again for letting me join you here. Im sure I havent said that enough. I really appreciate your helping me out." She drew closer, and then seemingly on impulse, leaned up to kiss his cheek softly.
Fox blinked again, turning his face to hers; they gazed at each other for a long moment, and then kissed softly and passionately. Krystal slid into his arms, pressing her hands to his chest, and he wrapped his arms around her, stroking the soft blue fur of her back lightly.
The kiss deepened, and the two stroked at each other eagerly. Just as Krystal was venturing to slide her hands up under his shirt, there came a loud banging at the door. Foxs head jerked up, and Krystal jumped back from him, blush spread widely across her muzzle; the moment had been broken. Snarling, Fox strode over to the door, throwing it open.
"Hey, Fox." Falco said, leaning on the doorframe. He casually glanced over Foxs shoulder, seeing Krystal, then returned his gaze to Fox. "I see the newcomer is here did I interrupt something?" The look in his eyes signaled that he knew he had.
"What is it Falco?" Fox said in a tight voice
Falco replied in the same nonchalant tone as before, "Everyone is waiting for you in the common room; you should hurry up and get over there. You spend enough time with Krystal as it is, you ought to spare some for your other friends." Without another word, Falco calmly turned and walked off, smirking slightly as he left, and leaving Fox standing in the door and growling low to himself.
He regained control after a few moments, and then turned to Krystal, though there was still a dangerous glint in his eyes. "I think it best if we continue this another time" Krystal, who by now was completely embarrassed, nodded quietly, and then walked quickly out. Fox closed the door, and then punched the wall beside it. He set to work getting himself cleaned up quickly, then stormed out of his room to the common room, finding everyone there, sitting around and relaxing, eating, and chatting. He glanced over at Krystal, and then headed over to Falco.
Peppy looked up from where hes been chatting with Krystal; she had seemed a bit dazed when she came back, and Falco had had that look he got when he managed to get under Foxs fur on his face when he came in. The old soldier was more than able to put two and two together, and started to rise, saying, "Now Fox, I"
Before he could even finish the first part, Fox said to Falco, "Whats your problem now, Falco?"
Slippy jumped a bit, then turned and looked to the two. "Come on, you guys not again! We just earned a victory! Cant we just sit and enjoy it?"
Falco looked up at Fox, but then decided he didnt like being stood over and rose to his feet. "What? All I did was come to get you. We were tired of waiting."
Fox glared at Falco, his eyes dark. "You knew she had come there, to speak with me in private, and yet you still came there, just so you could get between us." Fox had heard his own words, but felt angry enough at the situation to let it slide; there was no way to take it back now anyway.
Falco turned his head to one side, cutting his eyes over at Fox. "So, what? Are you saying that now I'm not good enough to come and talk with you while she's around? Why is it that lately, the only person you choose for your missions, and almost the only one that you spend any time with at all, is Krystal?" Falco turned and looked at Krystal with an apologetic expression, which seemed a bit out of character. "Not that Im angry at you at all, Krystal, it's just that Fox here seems to have forgotten about the fact that this is supposed to be a team, not just two people."
Krystal looked from one to the other, and realized that Falco had a point, though he had chosen a poor way to bring it up. "Well, in my opinion, you could have just brought it up when we came back, rather than going about it like this, but if this is what you think was needed to get things to work out, and that you need to settle this personally, I dont think I have the right to interfere with the way you do things. What exactly do you two normally do to solve these kinds of problems?"
Fox glared, then looked at Falco with the hint of amusement in his voice. "What do we do? We normally compete at something. Shooting, piloting, racing, hand to hand... I almost always win, but he just keeps on trying."
Falco's crest stood up a little stiffer at this, and he snapped back, "Oh, so you're better than me, huh? Is that why you've stopped using me as your wingman, leaving me behind on missions? Because I'm not good enough? I can't even come and talk to you without you coming to snap my head off later, is that it? What did I do that's so bad it's got your tail in a twist?"
Fox glared at him. "You know perfectly well what you did! What makes you think you have the authority to order me around? Last I checked, Im still the leader of this group, and if you dont like it, then you can just try to do something about it!"
Falco sneered at Fox's attempt to pull rank. "Oh, so now were deciding leadership by rite of challenge, huh? Well, if thats what you want, lets go!" He started towards Fox, but Slippy, then Peppy pushed between them, dragging them apart.
"You know the rules! No fighting on the ship!"
Falco: Goddamnit!!!!
Fox: Grrrr!
Krystal: Please Fox! Calm down! This isn't like you!
Slippy looked angry now too....
Slippy: If you want to fight, then we do in the simulation room, not in here!
Falco: ...
Slippy: And certainly not in front of our newest member either.
Fox broke off, realizing what he had been doing. He blushed slightly and sent an apologetic look to Krystal who simply smiled softly in understanding. He looked back to Falco...
Fox: I think we need to go settle this.
