Aubrey
He stepped into her backyard, and took long strides to the cherry tree, standing beneath it’s long branches, gazing up through the blossoms at the star-filled sky. It was a beautiful night, and he wished that he could be spending it with someone. Even the damned got lonely. He took a deep breath, and let his body go. Fading into the shadows, gliding up through the air, landing on her balcony. Sliding like mist through the glass doors, he became solid beside her bed. The full moon cast a strange light over her, making her skin shine, her hair silver. Her white sheets were kicked to the side, twisted around her leg. Her arm next to her, the other was across her stomach. He slowly stepped forward, and knelt beside her bed. Reaching out, he gently touched her hair, curled around her head like a halo, then moved his hand down to her shoulder, then slowly traced it down her arm. Her fingers uncurled, as if they welcomed his touch. He desperately wanted to take her hand, but their relationship was beyond hope. He could never change what he had become. He may struggle for a while, but then the urges would only get worse, and he always gave in to the instincts for survival.
She stirred, as if she sensed his presence, he looked at her face, her closed eyes, then down at her lips, licking his own. He could feel the pressure building. His darker side was closer to the surface tonight, pacing. Eager to escape and hunt and feed. She moved her arm, sliding it up from her stomach to over her head, pulling her nightshirt up, revealing her flat tanned stomach. His hand hovered over the silver piercing in her belly button. Her skin radiated sweet warmth, and he could sense the blood moving through her veins, pumping slowly, taunting him. Without warning, she sat up.
"Aubrey?"
He pulled back, startled. On impulse, released his body into the darkness, curling into the shadows, hiding from her.
"Show yourself," she whispered. He was amazed, no human was able to sense a vampire unless they made it known they were there. He farther retreated his aura, sinking into himself.
"I can feel you." She turned, staring hard around the room. Even through the mist that covered his eyes, he caught her gaze, her eyes reflecting the moonlight, dazing him.
"Please."
Almost loosing himself in her eyes, he turned in the darkness, blacking out her face, coiling between the doors escaping to her yard. He became solid on the grass, dew droplets reflecting the star's shine, making the whole yard glisten, spinning in time to see her push open the doors, stepping out onto her balcony, leaning over the railing, glancing around the yard.
"Aubrey!"
The wind blew her hair around her face, silver streaks dancing on the cool air. Staring at her, illuminated by the moonlight, he fought the urge to show himself to her. She looked over to the tree, staring through the branches as if she knew he was there. The wind rustled the tree, the blossoms swaying and brushing against each other. Soft, pink petals began to swirl in the wind. He stood in the falling petals, wanting her.
"Aubrey?"
She shifted her eyes, and locked onto his. Worried she had seen him, he took a step back, but her gaze shifted again, sliding around, watching the petals fall and rise in the breeze. He looked up again, as a tear slowly slid down her cheek, petals floating through the air, in front of her face. He took a breath to call out to her, his lips parting, and but she let out a cry and collapsed, kneeling on the marble floor, her hands covering her eyes that now leaked tears. He could taste the salty bitterness of pain in the air, and closed his mouth, his eyes narrowing, disgusted with himself. Turning his head away, but still heard the quiet sobs that racked through her body, felt her heart thump against her chest, pumping the sweet blood through her, keeping her alive. And he would not be the one responsible for her death. He would not allow her to be like him, walking around everyday knowing he was dead inside. Not having a purpose, resenting himself.
He looked back up, to see her still kneeling on the balcony, staring through the bars in wonder. Her eyes slid down his body, and back up to his face. His eyes grew wide and flashed red. He stepped back quickly, and turned to leave. His body began to release itself, into the mist so he could slide into the sky and be gone. She pushed herself to her feet and swung over the railing. Her pajama shorts ruffled in the breeze, blowing up her legs as she fell, and her shirt pulled up at the whip of the wind. His heart caught in his throat, and he was under her in a flash, catching her in his arms.
"You're so stupid," he whispered into her ear. He held her against his chest, her head rested on his shoulder, arms wrapped around his neck. His eyes closed, holing one arm under her legs, and the other supporting her back, reaching all the way around her, pulling her closer. Her hair smelled of apples, and he breathed her in as he ran his hand up her back. She took deep, shuddering breaths, her face buried in his shoulder. He pulled her back, setting her bare feet down on the cool grass. She steadied herself and looked up into his eyes. Her silver eyes caught his, as she stared into his own black. He wondered if this would catch his breath-but he hadn't breathed in so long...thoughts raced through his mind as he stared at her, oblivious to the cold night around them.
"I knew you would catch me."
Her voice was as soft as the petals, still swirling on the wind around them.
"I love you," he spoke without thinking. Three words, he used to say so often that now felt so foreign on his lips. She looked up through teary eyes, silver sparkles falling down her cheeks.
"Then why did you leave me?" Her voice choked, throat tightening with pain and confusion. Guilt twisted inside him, and he felt tears of his own come to his eyes. No, he thought. I won't cry, not now. Her eyes flickered back and forth betweens his, looking for any spark of emotion, and though he could still feel with his little bit of humanity he'd kept so far down inside him, none could be read from his face. He blinked, and tore his gaze from her.
"We can't be together." He dropped his arms, and started to step back, but she caught his face in her hands, one hand reached around to the back of his neck, pulling him to her. His face came closer, and her heart fluttered, her lips barely touching his.
"Yes we can," she murmured against his lips, finally pressing them together. He responded, his arms circling her waist. They pulled closer to each other, bodies pressed together, pushing harder as they deepened the kiss. His tongue slid into her mouth, sliding across hers. He savored the taste of her, sweet on his lips. He felt her heart flutter in her chest, and her blood pump faster. He pulled from her, kissing her cheek, still tasting of salt from her earlier tears. He moved down, kissing her neck and sucking gently. She moaned softly, her hands running up his neck, fingers twined in his thick black hair, pulling his head closer to her. He felt her heart beat faster and sucked harder at her neck, his hands running up her back, his teeth coming out, and his eyes glowing red. He started biting at her neck, and enjoyed the sweet fear that started to run cold through her veins.
"Aubrey-ah!" She gasped as he grabbed her arms, trying to push him away. Twisting them behind her, he smelled salt as tears came to her eyes.
"Don't give in-" she said between breaths. He chuckled faintly into her neck, running the tip of his tongue up, feeling her shudder beneath his fingertips. Her fear gave his dark side strength, and his sanity slipped slowly farther from him, the voice of humanity growing fainter as he felt his fangs complete in his mouth, and ran the tips against her skin. She whimpered, and he felt her heart beating against her chest that pumped the blood that was finally going to be his. You are mine, he thought to her. She opened her mouth, and he knew she was going to scream, but she stopped. She trembled, closing her eyes. He coolly searched her mind, then found the thought her fear had been hiding. Blind trust, she would let him take her, and they could be together. If she joined him, he would have no reason to push her away. She was drunk in love, and he had given in.
He pushed her away roughly, though his heart now gave in also. His humanity reasoned with itself, and all parts of him told him to go back to her. He shook with anger, and hatred with himself and what he was.
"Aubrey, please, we can be happy." She pulled her long blonde hair into one hand, and held her neck bare. It took all his control to keep away from her. His dark side pushed against his will, and he almost lost it, taking two long strides to her, pulling her closer, her gasping at his speed. His fangs flashed in the dying moonlight, smelling her fear and running his lips up her neck slowly. He got up to her ear, where he placed a soft kiss.
"Is this what you call happy?" He growled at her. She looked down, ashamed.
"Aubrey, I-" He glared down into her eyes, filled with sorrow.
"We cannot be together." He said, pausing between each word. Her eyebrows pulled together, and her eyes glossed over, her pouty lips turned down. She started shaking, knowing this time he wouldn't be coming back.
"Please," she whispered, closing her eyes. He looked down at her, a tear seeping under her eyelid, and slowly starting down her cheek. He reached out, brushing it from her cheek, and cupped her face in his hands. She licked her lips, tilting her head up slightly, her lips trembling. He took a deep breath, gathered all his strength, and kissed her. He held his instincts back, and slowly traced his tongue over hers. She responded, deepening it, trying to hold the moment forever, knowing it was over after this last kiss, their last embrace. Finally, when he couldn't hold himself back any longer, he pulled away.
"No," she cried, reaching out for him. "Please!" She stepped forward, but he had already released himself, and her hand only grabbed at the cold air. Staring at her empty hand, she let her tears flow, and collapsed onto the cold ground, sobbing into her hands.
He flew as fast as he could, jumping from shadow to shadow, finally becoming solid in mid-flight, and stumbled along the ground. He fell to his hands and knees, gasping for breath as he grasped the cold grass and dirt between his fingers. Anger filled him, but was slightly diminished from his bloodlust, still strong in his mind. His throat got tight, and his eyes misted over red, his fists clenching. He raised his fists and slammed them down to the soft earth, screaming out in rage, tilting his head back to the sky, his scream echoing though his chest and heart, long dead, but still knowing the cruelty of love.
